who discusses how Nature Study has influenced the 21st century concept of environmental literacy and explores the role that Rachel Carson played in the process.

Vivienne Shaffer has taught in museums, nature centers and other informal learning environments as well as in public and private schools. She holds a Masters degree in education from the Museum Leadership Program of Bank Street College. She has served as director of historic house museums in New York and Pennsylvania, including Rachel Carson’s birthplace and childhood home.

This presentation is a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, a Federal-State partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The PHC inspires people to come together and share a life of learning. Since 1973, the PHC has provided resources that empower local groups to help their communities explore history, literature, the arts and the ideas that shape the human experience.
